Old Carlisle Roman Fort

It had an area of 4.5 acres, surrounded by a double ditch. It was probably a cavalry fort from the fort’s size. It was an Ala of 500 troops named “the Augustan Wing, so named because of their virtue “in AD188 and were formally at Chesters, based on an altar found on site.

To the south, east and north of the fort was a civil settlement. Partial excavations indicate it to be 2nd century built in timber but destroyed in the 3rd century, Old Carlisle Roman Fort was rebuilt and occupied into the 4th century. South of the fort, north of the Roman Road is what appears to be a mansio, which is a courtyard building not dissimilar to a commander’s house, used by travellers of rank along the road. There are signs of an aqueduct east of the stream

There has been no proper excavation, therefore not much information.
